As always, I would like to strongly encourage people to ask
questions. Your anonymity is assured, unless you specifically
want to be named. Keep the questions coming - if you don't know
the answer to something, the chances are someone else doesn't
either - and we'd all benefit from an answer.
In tranfree 8 I predicted a boom in the translation market in the
first quarter of 2000. I don't know if anyone else has felt it
yet, but we've certainly had a busier time lately than we did in the last quarter of 1999. (At
ALMAL)
We've had translation clients phoning us who we haven't heard from for months.
Hopefully the prediction will materialise and there will be
plenty of work for everyone and we will all have a great year 2000!

This month sees the beginning of a series of articles on software
localization by Bert Esselink, author of "A Practical Guide to
Software Localization". This is a subject that many people have
requested further information about, but which I don't know much
about. Since it is going to be a major growth field over the
coming years, I am delighted that Bert has agreed to write about
this subject for tranfree. If translators want to make themselves
recession-proof over the next few years I would strongly
recommend branching out into this field. Bert will help to
educate us over the next few editions of tranfree.

ProZ follow-up
Further to my announcement of ProZ.com a few editions ago here is
a short follow-up...
ProZ.com "...recently announced KudoZ, a point-based reward
system that facilitates rapid knowledge sharing among
professionals in the field of translation. Professional
translators encounter, on a daily basis, terms so new or
specialized that they can not be found in dictionaries or other
reference material. ProZ.com's new KudoZ system solves the
translator's dilemma by enabling them to ask up to thousands of
specialists (in hundreds of language pairs) for help with a term
at the touch of a button; the question is automatically forwarded
to the ProZ translators who are best suited to answer. The KudoZ
points system provides an incentive and reward to those who
answer term/phrase requests. By showing KudoZ point totals--
organized by language and specialization--in their ProZ profiles,
users are able to demonstrate expertise to potential clients."
Henry's approach is a little different from other translator
directories, where you can pay for being ranked near the top, or
be ranked near the top for buying certain products. It looks like
here you can work your way to the top by helping other
translators with their problems. This is an innovative idea that
I have not come across before. Nice one - I approve!
