Novice Translators - My Hat

After mentioning the WSJ article last month and the fact that they had us down as a site that "helps novice translators", we got this great comment from Liv Bliss...

"Novice translators," indeed! I did my first translation-for- pay in 1978 and have been at it, for better and worse, ever since, with 14 published titles gathering dust on my bookshelves (though on no one else's, I expect).

While I have not been in the active freelance translation market for a while, being employed full-time by a translation company, I still do quite a bit of translation and can vouch for the fact that translatortips has no difficulty in educating, amusing and enlightening a practitioner of 22 years' vintage.

Follow-up Job Site Survey

After the overwhelming response to the 2001 translatortips® job site survey for the second year in a row, we figured this is a real hot issue for translators. So we thought maybe there's a few other questions you'd like to know the answer to as well...

  • Are the premium memberships at these job sites worth it?

  • Are translation job sites worth bothering with at all?

  • Do they create a bidding situation where the clients only go for the cheapest bidder - forcing down the prices in the market?

  • Do they attract the poor quality clients or are they pretty good?

  • Are they good for or harmful to the translation industry?
