Working for Friends and Family Results

by Alex Eames

Well, after seeing the quick poll results from the last tranfree...

http://www.tranfree.com/family-survey.html

...it looks as though my experience of business dealings with family and friends is not so unusual after all.

At the time of writing, exactly one week after launching the poll we have 215 votes. The question we asked was...

Is your experience of doing business with friends/family mostly...

  • positive
  • negative
  • I've never done it

...the answers were...

  • 79 (36.7%) positive
  • 96 (44.7%) negative
  • 40 (18.6%) never done it

So if you do business with friends and family, it seems as if you are more likely than not to have negative experiences. WOW!

No wonder they say "don't do business with family".

If you think that you only have negative experiences with perhaps one in ten complete strangers, that puts things right into perspective doesn't it?

My 'gut-feel' was that this is true. But now we have numbers from our fellow professionals within the translation industry to prove it. Thanks to all who voted.

I'll be discouraging members of the family and friends from doing business with us in future. The trouble is, it isn't always that simple.

The reason you have a negative experience could just be because you were coerced into doing a job you didn't want because it was "for family".

It would be easier to hide behind a policy...

"sorry we don't do business with friends/family"

...perhaps this is the best way to do it in future? I think so.
