Answers to Questions Most Commonly Asked by Translators No. 3

How do I get started?

by Phil Naylor

At translatortips®, we get quite a few emails each week asking for advice on "How to get started" or "Where to begin" from people who recognise the huge potential of becoming a freelance translator but need a little help making the first steps.

I hope here to give a summary of the main pointers, plus offer a few tips to give everyone that competitive edge.

Many of you are well established and highly successful already. If you stop reading here, best of luck with your business!

However, as you will have discovered by now, translatortips® serves every cross-section of the translator community. So I just wanted to focus on a few points for those thinking of starting out and those who have just got going and are looking for ways keep the work coming in.

Can I become a translator?

Ask yourself these questions...

  • Do I have good reading skills in one language and good written skills in my mother-tongue (native language)?

  • Do I have a good common-sense approach to running a business?

  • Am I prepared to work hard and make sacrifices?

If you can answer 'Yes' to these questions, then you probably have what it takes to be extremely successful.

Remember - NEVER highlight your weaknesses, always emphasise your strengths.
