tranfree issue 34 - 22 June 2001 "Family Poll Results, How to Start?"
Welcome to issue 34 of tranfree - the newsletter for translators.
This tranfree contains the results of our quick poll on whether working for friends and family members is a good idea. Also we have an article which answers many of the questions we get asked every week. Phil has put together a set of answers that points to areas of the site where beginners and less experienced translators can get excellent advice and tips. If you're a seasoned professional, this article will save you time too. Every time a beginner asks you how to get started, all you need to do is point them in the direction of this article or email them a copy of this tranfree edition.

Star LetterFrom: "Renata Celente" "Hi Alex After following your advices, specially those concerned to introduction letters, I started to send my résumé to potential clients. I might add that I've also bought Glenn's Guide a couple of years ago. Oddly, GG says that we shouldn't spend too much time with introduction letters since clients throw them away right away. And so I did the first time I sent resumes. The response from clients was minimal. At this time, I chose to follow your advices and wrote a beautiful and professional introduction letter, stating what I offer as a translator and what I consider important in our profession in order to deliver a good translation. Bingo! The responses were far beyond my expectations! Many of them wrote me back saying how I perfectly caught their spirit towards professional translation. I must thank you for your wonderful book. When I bought it, I went straight to the e-mail addresses. So bad I didn't have the time to read it throughly. Keep on your good work. Best wishes from Brazil, Thanks Renata

Translation JokeContributed by K Hildebrand at our
translatortips® jokes forum... Several years ago I worked as a missionary in Frankfurt Germany. My partner was an American who had been speaking German for less than 6 months. We once knocked on the door of a young woman who answered but would not open the door. Through the closed door, we informed her we were from the church. The young woman excused herself by saying... "Leider habe ich keine Zeit, Ich ziehe mich um." My partner, believing she said... "Sorry I have no time, I am moving (Ich ziehe um)" ...quickly asked... "Dürfen wir helfen?" (May we help?). He understood her silence when I told him what she actually said was... "Sorry I have no time, I am undressing."
