"Payment Issues and Quiet Times"

Welcome to issue 37 of tranfree - the newsletter for translators.

We made it to Poland. 2 days of hard driving. It was tougher than ever this year because of 30+ degrees C temperature and traffic jams in Germany. But we got here OK in the end. If we ever do it again (and we say 'never again' every year) we'll get a car with air-conditioning.

The new translatortips® ecommerce system is up and running. I'm glad it works because I wrote it myself. Even these days, you don't seem to be able to buy software that does exactly what you want. Frustrating but true. >

August is usually a quiet month in the translation year. So we thought it would be a good time for one of John McCarthy's articles about all the things you can do when you are not inundated with work

We're also taking a look at the impact on translation businesses of non-payment and late payment. Is it the biggest, hottest issue, or overblown hype? Only you can decide which it is for your business. Check out the article and give us your views.

Enjoy and benefit from tranfree.

Dear Alex,

I couldn't resist buying the 2nd edition of your eBook at the full price shortly after its appearance, even though you mentioned before that an upgrade path would eventually become available for people who want to upgrade from version 1.

I have found the 1st edition very well written and, more importantly, very helpful, and wasn't disappointed by the 2nd edition either, quite the contrary. And even at the full price, it didn't seem too expensive.

Keep up the good work!

Many thanks and best regards,

Tony Schikula

Thanks Tony

Translation Joke

Contributed by Lynne O'Connor

English subtitles used in films from Hong Kong:

  • I am darn unsatisfied to be killed in this way.

  • Fatty, you with your thick face have hurt my instep.

  • Same old rules: no eyes, no groin.

  • A normal person wouldn't steal pituitaries.

  • Darn, I'll burn you into a BBQ chicken.

  • Take my advice, or I'll spank you a lot.

  • Who gave you the nerve to get killed here?

  • This will be of fine service for you, you bag of the scum. I am sure you will not mind that I remove your toenails and leave them out on the dessert floor for ants to eat.
