tranfree issue 42 - 6 November 2001

"Payment, Paperwork & Reserves"

Welcome to issue 42 of tranfree - the newsletter for translators.

Hi everyone. I've spent a lot of my time since the last edition laying down a wood-panel floor in our house. It's been quite hard work, but we're really pleased with it. It also made a change from the usual "staring at a screen all day" routine.

October's been a quietish month this year for us as regards translation work. Not complaining. It's always nice to have time for other things - like having a life beyond work.

If you're having a quiet time it's a good time to do some marketing. Consider tranmail. Andrei Gerasimov has got 375,000 words worth of work this year from clients he got through using tranmail...

...more on that later.

Soon the pre-Christmas rush will start. There's usually a bit of a flurry of activity as people want to clear projects by the end of the year. I hope that this year will not prove to be an exception.

It's firework night here in the UK as I write this. There's lots of bangs and flashes going on outside. The number of fireworks going off around here has been a lot more than last year. This shows that people have money to spend, so a UK recession does not look likely in my opinion. OK, it's a stupid little thing to base a prediction on, but stupid little things like that usually precede official economic indicators by several weeks or months. Time will tell.

This issue is broadly focussed on payment. Enjoy and prosper.

"Hello Alex

Great underwater pictures! [ http://tranfree.com/holiday ]

I have a first "slack" day since February and at last read your survey "Online Translation Job Sources Survey". Convincing analysis!

Your tranmail database and local clients ensured me the workload of about 500,000 words from January to October, 2001 (tranmail - 75%, local clients - 25%). (feel free to quote)

Thanks
Andrei Gerasimov, Ph.D.

Thanks Andrei - it's great to hear how well you've been doing from tranmail. 375,000 words worth of work from tranmail sounds like a lot. Well done.

Is Your ISP Overprotective?

A couple of times recently I've tried to send people emails containing .EXE executable files and they have not been received. This is not the end of the world, but it can be inconvenient - particularly since I got no message from the ISP to say my message was undelivered.

It seems that some ISP's - Internet Service Providers - don't trust you to determine whether or not you wish to be able to receive .EXE files.

The ISP's in question are...

  • AOL
  • Freeserve

There may well be others too. Has anyone else noticed a similar problem? No doubt this is in response to the ever-growing spread of email viruses. So their intentions are good, but it seems like overkill to me.

A T-shirt made in Turkey was sold in Quebec as 'Fabriqué en Dinde' instead of 'en Turquie', the former being the bird, of course, not the country.

Siemens' first translation of their marketing slogan 'Technology without the thorns' into German came out as 'Technology without the pricks'.

What to do with this Greek deodorant? The English instructions said: Push up bottom.
