"Bulk Discounts For Translation?"

Welcome to issue 46 of tranfree - the newsletter for translators.

The last tranfree went out right at the end of January and I didn't get one out in February.

I was amazed by the number of people who wrote in asking if they missed an edition or if there were problems with the distribution system.

I'm flattered that people missed tranfree . It's comforting to know that you enjoy it.

In fact I've been busy working on the tranfree archives and had a total clear out of my office because we had a new carpet fitted.

We've just hit 28,000 email subscribers, despite considerable pruning due to problems with the email delivery industry.

Companies like Mindspring.com have been rejecting emails from our delivery service PostmasterGeneral.com, so in January over 1,600 subscribers were...

...pruned out.

In fact, Mary Maloof was subscribed using a mindspring address and her tranfree was not delivered - which was a bit rough, since she wrote one of the articles

Enjoy and benefit from tranfree

    "Hi Alex,
Thanks for the reminder. I actually purchased How to Earn $80,000+ per Year as a Freelance Translator a couple of weeks ago, and I must say it was just what I needed!

I have worked as an in-house translator for a translation agency in Germany before; however, after I moved to the US I realized if I wanted to continue translating for a living I would have to learn more about the business aspect of the game.

Your ebook explained everything I needed to know - and thanks to the valuable information it contained I am now ready to launch my business as a freelance translator.
    Thanks again!

    Best regards,
    Agi Marto

ps. I really enjoyed the book's humorous style "

Thanks Agi

Airport Marketing Vote Results

The poll we recently ran after controversy regarding airport marketing ideas was as follows...

What do you think about 'airport marketing' as described in tranfree 44-45? (42 votes overall)

  • I think it's a great idea - 37 (88.1%)
  • I think it's unprofessional - 5 (11.9%)

Of those few who voted, most liked the ideas. To see what the fuss was about, check out tranfree 44 and tranfree 45

Since we usually get a lot more votes in our polls, clearly the majority of people do not have strong views on this issue. The wording of the question was deliberately chosen to polarize views into 'lovers' & 'haters' of the ideas.

This could be why fewer people voted, because they didn't really fit into either extreme camp. Either way, nearly eight times as many people loved the idea than hated it - which is comforting ;)

Feedback From Issue 45

Topic: The Six Deadly E-mail Sins
Claire posted 29 January 2002 17:31

I just wanted to say that I thought Mary's article on 'how to conduct yourself via e-mail' was fantastic. Mary, you always write such great articles but I really thought this was great.

I am one of those people who also hits the delete button when there is no e-cover letter to accompany an application for work. Not only do I find it rude and inconsiderate but I am too afraid to open attachments for fear of viruses.

So unless I receive an introduction in the body of the mail, I don't open it. OK, so you can't guaratee that some bug or other won't crawl into your system but if I know it is a genuine professional application, it certainly helps.

People have certainly (in general) forgotten etiquette when it comes to using e-mail. We should remember that it is not to be treated any differently than any other form of media. I never receive just a CV by snail mail for instance, so why by e-mail? It makes no sense to me! Ah well!

Bravo for Mary.

Translation Joke

Not so much translation, but language errors, which made me laugh out loud...

Actual writings on hospital charts:

  • She has no rigors or shaking chills, but her husband states she was very hot in bed last night.
  • Patient has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year.
  • On the second day the knee was better, and on the third day it disappeared.
  • The patient has been depressed since she began seeing me in 1993.
  • Discharge status: Alive but without my permission.
  • Healthy appearing decrepit 69 year old male, mentally alert but forgetful.
  • The patient refused autopsy.
  • The patient has no previous history of suicides.
  • Patient has left white blood cells at another hospital.
