The 'World Cup Effect' & Marketing Suicide

World Cup Affects Translation

Has your work-flow slowed down because of the world cup?

Four years ago, on the day that the world cup started, the work totally dried up for a period of a week or two.

We noticed it again this time. But it was not so pronounced. The lack of new work only lasted a few days this time.

Shopping

One thing we have noticed is that it's a great time to go shopping when the England matches are on. The town is almost deserted. Since we're not very interested in football (soccer to those of you who speak US English) we're taking full advantage of the traffic-free roads and people-free shops. It's great! Pity England just lost to Brazil - looks like the quiet roads may be over

Holiday

Since work usually slows down at the times of major sporting events, it is also a good time to plan a holiday. That way, you will lose out on less business opportunities than if you went at another time.

Photos

Talking of holidays, I finally managed to get some of my photos from Egypt onto the web. If you're interested in pretty pictures of exotic tropical fish (Ex. crocodile fish) taken by me while diving in Dahab, please have a look at...

Translation Joke

Amazing what can get lost in translation!

"Why it will be a long time before computers replace human translators."

  • The bandage was wound around the wound.
  • The farm was used to produce produce.
  • The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
  • We must polish the Polish furniture.
  • He could lead if he would get the lead out.
  • The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
  • Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
  • A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
  • When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
  • I did not object to the object.

If you don't understand any of the above, they are all words with multiple meanings Ex. a bass is a fish and also a description of a voice or instrument with low notes.
