: : I would advise your first step to be to gain an in-house position thereby obtaining as much experience as possible (this way you also get to work on a variety of specialist texts with plenty of back-up from colleagues). Most agencies will look for experience and qualifications. It would therefore also be advisable to take a post-graduate diploma/degree in translation to show that you are serious. Join one of the professional bodies in your country if possible.

: I'm in the same boat, but with a different background...My language pairs are Spanish-English and Portuguese-English. I've got an M.A. in spanish and have published some LITERARY translations. I'm trying to get started in the money making side of this--i.e. not literary. You recommended in-house positions at agencies. I'm in NYC, and from what I've found out those are rarely available.
