: Hi Liz and Claire,

: I agree with Claire that £50 per 1000 words is a good starting price, and you could certainly charge more than that for translations in your own specialist field as you have in-depth knowledge of it and it's quite a rare subject area for into-English translators.

: However, I'm afraid I have to disagree, Claire, as regards the £75 per 1000 to London agencies. You'd certainly get this for specialised texts, but you'd probably need to supplement these with more general work, and you wouldn't have much chance of getting general agency work at £75 - there's just too much competition and too many people willing to work for less. On average, London agencies are generally willing to pay around £50-60. Good old market forces.
: :(

: And for what it's worth - no, I don't own or work for a London agency! :))

: All the best

: Apollo

Hi Apollo

I am glad you told me that. I was basing my info on details I receive from translators from the London area. I am often surprised by the rates they present and so assumed they were receiving enough work. Granted they are often specialists but they usually offer a good range of subjects. I have to admit to not giving those CVs a second glance.

I am pleased to know it is not the norm.

Thanks

Claire
