Matt --
As ambitious and confident as you sound, without experience, I would discourage you from venturing on your own in this field. You need to crawl before you walk. And if you'll be going to school, if you're referring to the NW campus in Evanston, IL, you might consider working as an apprentice or whatever the entry-level position would be for translators at Rotary International (their HQ is in Evanston). I understand they have a fairly large translation department. You could get experience while you earn money.
I don't know if they're hiring, or what their requirements are, but that would really be your best bet -- to work alongside others, with experience.
I assume you're in the Chicagoland area. If so, you might want to get some information on the local translators' association: CHICATA. The number's 312 / 836-0961. You'll get a machine, but ask for info on the next meeting. Meetings are open to the public and are usually held in a public library. You can meet and learn from others. We have 100+ members in various languages and work situations.
Best wishes,
Betina
