Well, John, for me it's not an exact science. I base it loosely on the number of words (i.e., the size of the project) and then on the type of text (i.e., vocabulary, formatting, etc.) Then I figure, based on past experience, how long it'll take me. As I may have mentioned, the quote is 'per project'. I must also mention that I do not work for clients who are going to haggle about price. I know of one translator who'll provide a straight, unformatted text translation for his basic rate and then add cents here and there for extra tabbing, centering, bolding. Aw, come on, that's so unprofessional.

Just a few weeks ago I had the experience of working on a HUGE rush project: legal, computer terminology. I gave the client a guesstimate and he was in such a pinch (and must've trusted me!) that he just told me to go ahead. In the end, I charged him 150% for it being a rush project. Any way that I figured it out, be it 'per word', 'per page', or 'per hour', it all came out to the same price. It was a real eye-opener and only confirmed (to myself) that my rates are what I consider fair.
