Tina --
All the tips I could give you would be too lengthy for this medium, but I'll you a starting point.
First of all, anyone who works as a freelancer needs to see him/herself as a businessperson. To that end, there's a very useful book that I'd characterize as a 'must read': Homemade Money. It gives very practical advice for anyone who works from home and is written by Barbara Brabec. My public library didn't have it but I suggested it at the desk for purchase and they got it. Good advice, and it's free.
Another free resource is the SBA (Small Business Administration). S.C.O.R.E. is a group of retired executives with various specialties that give free advice on an appointment basis.
There's much more, but this should give you a good start.
HTH.
