Accreditation necessary?

Hi all,
Does anyone know about the accreditation process--i.e. is it really
necessary in order to find clients or get hired by agencies? Just
wondering, because I was checking out the American Translators'
Association website and, in essence, you have to pay so much money to
take their test: to take the test you have to be a paying member. To
KEEP TELLING people you once took and passed the test, you have to
keep paying them yearly fees. Sounds more like a money-making scheme
rather than a true way to ensure quality. Am I just being paranoid?
Is it just the ATA, perhaps?
Anything you can tell me about your experience will help.
You can respond to this message or to mamcart@hotmail.com.
And to the two people who helped me on the resume question--THANKS!
Mary
