Accreditation is not necessary. It doesn't even prove that you're a *good* translator.
What it does show is that you're serious about making a living as a translator, and that is worth something to a potential customer.
If you are serious, and you do start making money as a translator, you'll be happy to write off your ATA dues as a tax-deductible expense.
(Write off the accreditation exam fee, too, as a marketing expense -- because accreditation is demonstrably NOT necessary to enable you to practice the profession. If it were, the IRS would not let you deduct it.)
