I emailed the person in question repeating my threat and have had no response, so here are the details of the situation...

On 12 March, I responded to a job (job no. 8655) posted by a certain James Matthew Gardner (proz ID:-http://www.proz.com/translators/4022?bs=1&eid_c=9067). Naturally I still have copies of the emails between us, and there is are also copies on my "job history".

I agreed to take several thousands words of a translation at an extremely short deadline and ended up practically working through the night. The agreed price was just over $450.

I emailed Mr. Gardner one month after delivery and requested payment. He politely informed me that he was still waiting for his client to settle his account whereupon he would settle mine. As he was a fellow translator and as I am aware that clients can be a bit slow (!), I was fine with this and emailed him a few weeks later with no response.

Since this time, I have emailed Mr. Gardner approximately 10 times asking for payment, which is over one year overdue. My lawyer has sent him a letter, again with no response. The very last thing I wanted to do was to "expose" him on such a website, but I do not want the same thing to happen to anyone else. I have been working as a freelancer for over 2 years and this is the only time that this has ever happened. Our profession is very much based on trust and I am angry that Mr. Gardner does not seem to respect this.

Ideally, Mr. Gardner would respond to this email, explain himself and settle my account. I am an eternal optimist and am prepared to believe that there have been several misunderstandings but I cannot afford not to chase up £300 or so! Hopefully Mr. Gardner can redeem himself. Until then, I strongly advise all users of this site to beware of this translator and take into consideration what I have experienced before giving/accepting a job to/from him.

Thank you for your time.
