I gather from your comments that you are dealing with direct clients. It seems that you've already stated your displeasure when having to collect, but perhaps you should give them a gentle reminder at the time you take on the project (rather than after), or maybe NOT so gentle depending on how things are going!
My invoices state 'Payment Due Upon Receipt'. In all the years I've been in business for myself, I've been fortunate in that normal payment times range from 2-4 weeks. I have a few clients, especially the larger corporations who seem to be more bureaucratic, who pay within 30-60 days. I don't like it, but I put up with it because I want their business. It's never gone longer than that, and their reliable -- they're just the agreed-upon terms. I don't think I'd continue to work for any chronic late-payer. My kids are enough for me to chase after!
