: : I've been asked to give a rate for my transcription and translation services. I don't know what would be a fair asking price. Any advice?? I need this information ASAP. Please email it to me at amyyoung227@hotmail.com

Amy, I saw your request for info in the @mazing Publications ranslators Forum. I have just entered the business, although I've been doing translations for quite a while. A reccomended price is about .06 (six cents) per word, using a word processor word count as a guide. You may also charge by the page. In Atlanta, GA it costs about $25.00 to translate a birth certificate or other legal document on the spot! Obviously, here the need is immediate, so maybe that's why they can get away with that price. a $12 to $14 per page would be justified. I charged $10. per page, single spaced 15 years ago and no one complained. So, by now I believe that would be a good rate. It's important that you do not underestimate your rates, because, as my accountant said, it would be more difficult to raise the price later.
Let me know if this helps and good luck.
