I would advise your first step to be to gain an in-house position thereby obtaining as much experience as possible (this way you also get to work on a variety of specialist texts with plenty of back-up from colleagues). Most agencies will look for experience and qualifications. It would therefore also be advisable to take a post-graduate diploma/degree in translation to show that you are serious. Join one of the professional bodies in your country if possible.
