Hi everyone!
I am new to translatortips as from now. I have had a browse through the forum posts, and I was hoping to build on the discussions about exams and qualifications that have gone before. Specifically I would appreciate some opinions and advise on the Institute of Linguists (UK) Diploma in Translation. The deadline for this years registration is fast approaching, and I am trying to figure out if having the DipTrans qualification is worth the £500 that I would have to pay to sit the exam...
My language combination is Swedish and English, and I am setting out as a freelance translator. So far I have been in contact with Swedish bodies thast examine translators, and also Swedish institutes for translators. No one really claims to have heard about the DipTrans before, and no one that I have been in contact with in Sweden can say if it would increase my chances of freelance work from companies in Sweden. Over here (in the UK) I have spoken to the Institute of Translators and Interpretors who say that yes, the DipTrans might help to gain ITI membership eventually, but again no indcation as to the usefulness of the exam for the purpose of gaining work (which at the end of the day is what matters.).

From your experience as professional translators, how useful is the DipTrans qualification?

Are there other exams/qualifications I should consider instead?

I have a Swedish university degree, my current job (part-time, so plenty of time to do the translations) is geared towards translations, as I work with the company's exports to Scandinavia. I have also some freelance work under my belt already.

Thank you very much! Anna
