HiI wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the level of professional indemnity cover it would be prudent to take out as a freelance translator? The options for the indemnity insurance policy offered through the ITI in the UK range from 50,000 GBP to 1 million GBP and I have no idea what level would be sensible as I have no idea how high a reasonable claim might be. I obviously don't want to be underinsured, but I don't want to pay more than necessary for my premiums either. I translate a range of texts but my specialism is medical/pharmaceutical whichh makes me think maybe I should opt for a high limit but I just don't know. Both the ITI and the insurance company in question say they can't give any advice on this. Any info from others would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, K ------------------ K McDowell German>English freelance translator IP: 88.107.212.142 |

A good question indeed. In your field I would have thought a high liability insurance a good idea. Imagine the scenario where you make a bad error and a phase II or III clinical trial is blown because of it? Or worse, somebody dies Doesn't bear thinking about does it? Either that or go for a low limit, and put in your terms and conditions that your liability extends no further than the value of your fee. You could disclaim responsibility for your work, but I don't look favourably on people who do this. What is the difference in premiums between 50k and 1 million?

In your position, I think I'd go for as much insurance as I could afford. Like Alex says, in your particular field, compensation payouts could be enormous. Good luck! ------------------ ttips@midsun.co.uk www.midsun.co.uk IP: 213.123.176.162 |
