Hello everyone,I am interested in becoming a qualified translater, therefore I was very pleased to find a list of institutions in the ezine a few weeks ago offering various translation courses. Well, I have checked them all and I have found one which particularly interests me. It is the WORLD LANGUAGE SERVICES CERTIFICATE IN TRANSLATION. Words Language Services (Dublin, Ireland) offers 'internationally recognised CERTIFICATE and DIPLOMA courses for professional translators, which may be followed from anywhere in the world by distance learning'. The WLS Certificate in Translation is billed as suitable for novice translators, with the focus on practical translation training and subject areas typical to commercial translation. More details from... <http://homepage.tinet.ie/~wls/tranbroc.htm> In their information brochure it says that all tutors are qualified and experienced translaters, with relevant teaching experience. Isn´t this one of the best ways to learn? Or would it be better to take a Certificate course at a University? The New York University offers translation courses which are more expensive than the WLS course but which also last longer. The applicant has to pass a test to be able to enter the course whereas for the WLS no such thing is required. Payment must accompany the WLS enrolment form , so how can they make sure that the applicant meets the entry requirements? It says that the Certificate has been designed to offer an entry route to the translation profession to those of high linguistic ability, but with no experience in translation, which is my case. The again, the course only lasts aproximately 12 weeks by e-mail, whereas the University courses all take up to six months. To make it short: Any information , opinion or personal experience related to studying for a Certificate in Translation would be more than appreciated and it will certainly help me to make a decision. Thanks. Kind regards Eve

Hi Eve, I too am interested in the Cerificate in Translation offered by WLS.(see post from April 18). I also have very little experience in translation and am looking for a distance learning program. I have received their brochure and I am now waiting to receive the sample set that they offer in the brochure. In addition to that, I have been in touch with a person who has completed the program thru WLS. She found the program very professional and challenging. The info she provided me would probably be too much to write about here. We need to correspond thru email. Is that possible? Maybe, PHil at translatortips can pass your email to me with your permission and we can correspond further. Thanks DEBBIE [This message has been edited by alex (edited 10 May 2001).] IP: 204.60.225.236 |

Hi Debbie,Thanks for your reply. I read your message asking for information about the WLS and was surprised to see that nobody had answered you. Anyway, I´m glad to hear that you´re in contact with someone who found the course professional and challenging. I would be pleased to keep in touch with you and have no objections of Phil passing on my private e-mail to you, on the contrary I´d appreciate it. So Phil, if you´re reading this you´ve got my permission to send my private e-mail to Debbie. Please let me know if you need an e-mail directed to you personally to confirm this. Katy76If you look at the difference in dates between the original posting and your posting you will see that this is not a subject that gets a lot of attention. Not many people about, it seems, who have done this course. ------------------ Alex Eames http://www.translatortips.com helping translators do better business IP: 83.26.98.187 |
