Hello, I am very happy abour this new forum which I hope will help conference interpreters and interpreters-to-be around the world. I am a Greek translator living in Paris. This year I'm taking the postgraduatie coure of conference interpreting at the Esit, here in paris. I would be interesting though in working for free in order to acquire some experience. Do you think this is against good professional practice? Does anyone works already for free (consecutive or simultaneous) for NGOs for example? I would appreciate any help, comments, infos on the subject.Best regards, Eleni ------------------ Eleni ZISSI Greek-French-English 11 bis, rue Vasco de Gamma 75015 Paris Tel/FAX: +33 1 45574881 Mob: +33 6 82845490

I believe that is is not immoral to interpret for free for community functions, as long as it is announced that you are volunteering. Specifically, I believe it is good to interpret for organization that would not be able to pay for an interpreter. If the organization would otherwise contract someone, you are indeed taking a job away from someone who believes s/he doesn't need any more practice and can charge. One difficulty here is finding simultaneous interpreting equipment for small community organizations which don't have their own. In California, you can sometimes borrow trade unions' equipment if you promise to replace their batteries. I don't know about Paris... Good luck! IP: 63.192.206.190 |
