Hello
I’m confused about the sense of “what is more” in the follow sentence:
What is more, because of Teixeira's abrupt departure from the Rio de Janeiro school system in December of 1935, when he was, purged during the anticommunist crackdown, the high degree of continuity between his progressive reform program and the increasingly nationalist authoritarian administration. imposed. in Rio de Janeiro, is strikingly clear. (p. 4)

The normal definition doesn’t make much sense for me.

Also I’ve doubt in translate “high-modernist” in the social/culture meaning.

Anyone could help me?
Thank you all.
