Hi allI was wanting to check with you all if my rates sound about right. I am based in the UK and will be translating from French to English. One of my specialist subjects is genetics. I am intending to charge around £45/ £50 for agency clients and £65 for direct customers. Probably a little more for genetics translations. Does this sound about right? There seems to be such a blanket of secrecy around rates that it is hard to know what to charge. Thanks again Hannah IP: 212.162.214.194 |

Hi Hannah,Your suggested rates sound reasonably okay to me. But definitely charge more for the specialised texts if you can - some clients (particularly agencies) won't accept much higher charges than this. Prices are very much linked with demand, and there are lots of French > English translators in the UK. In fact, I've even heard of some translators starting off freelancing with a rate of GBP 30 to agencies.... Although you may get away with charging direct clients more. Go in with your highest price, then if they say they can't afford it, come down a bit if you want to. Hope this helps. Good luck!
