For those of us who have never worked in-house, I was wondering if any project managers out there could let us know some not-so-obvious "little" things and maybe even some "big" things that translators can do or don't do to make your jobs easier and subsequently get your repeat business. What are some things translators do that impress you and what things are annoying? What is your average day like? Do people call you requesting the impossible? What kinds of reactions do you get when an inexperienced company finds out how much a translation can cost or how long it will take? Also, do you have any funny stories you can share? Thanks, Jeff Whittaker IP: 24.26.70.109 |

Wow Jeff, that's quite a list!! quote: ...some not-so-obvious "little" things and maybe even some "big" things that translators can do or don't do to make your jobs easier and subsequently get your repeat business.
Well, this one at least is easy to answer concisely! You could have a look at Alex's book How to earn $80,000/£50,000 a year as a freelance translator: the URL for this is http://www.translatortips.net/ht50.html . This contains a lot of useful tips on how to endear yourself to project managers. You could also try the tranfree free e-zine archive at http://www.translatortips.net/tranfree.html , that contains plenty of tips too. quote: What is your average day like? Aargh. Aargh. Aargh. To quote Bridget Jones! There's no such thing as an "average" day unfortunately, they're all a bit unique in themselves!! There are times when impossible requests outweigh the possible ("we can do the impossible, miracles are harder!"). And as for inexperienced companies - well, this is one way in which agencies really earn the markup they put on freelancers' work! quote: Also, do you have any funny stories you can share?
Millions! Any particular areas you're interested in hearing about? I hope this is of some use to you. All the best ------------------ Apollo apollo@translatortips.net

Hi Jeff,my first reaction when I saw your extensive shopping list of questions was... "Hey, that's someone collecting material for a book" Are you? ------------------ Alex Eames http://www.translatortips.com helping translators do better business IP: 62.252.224.4 |

No I am not collecting material for a book. The purpose of my post was curiosity as well as an effort to get this forum going with some interesting discussions. It always seems like no one wants to be the first to post anything.IP: 24.26.70.109 |
