Several years ago I worked as a missionary in Frankfurt Germany. My partner was an American who had been speaking German for less than 6 months. We once knocked on the door of a young woman who answered but would not open the door. Through the closed door,
we informed her we were from the church. The young woman excused herself by saying,
“Leider habe ich keine Zeit, Ich ziehe mich um.” My partner, believing she said, “Sorry I have no time, I am moving (Ich ziehe um),” quickly asked, “Dürfen wir helfen?” (May we help?). He understood her silence when I told him what she actually said was “Sorry I have no time, I am undressing.”
